Victorian Evening

Each year, on the first two Thursdays in December Maldon holds a special evening known as Victorian Evening which celebrates traditional Victorian Christmas times. Shopkeepers and local people and dress up in typical Victorian attire and on these evenings, the shops stay open late and street stalls sell hot chestnuts, traditional food, crafts and handmade items.

There is a feast of entertainment supplied by local charities and organisation to keep the huge crowds that descend on the Town entertained. From craft fayres, to Punch and Judy shows, fire-eaters, bagpipes, various bands, donkey rides around the Plume Library, Morris dancers,  barrel organs, steam engines, tombolas, Victorian cycles, children's carousel and a roaming barbershop quartet to name but a few. And of course, Father Christmas is to be found at the Maldon Emporium.

The ground floor of the Moot Hall is open, where you may even catch a glimpse of Queen Victoria being welcomed by the Mayor before taking a drive to reign over the High Street and her 'Subjects' in a very regal vintage car.

Victorian evenings start at 6.30 p.m. each evening and normally festivities cease around 10 p.m. The High Street is closed to traffic from 5.30 p.m. on these evenings and there are free buses operating from Tesco and Morrison car parks.
