Maldon Heritage Weekend – 14th – 15th September, 2019
When the National Trust’s Heritage Open Days return for their 25th year in September. Here in Maldon there are 16 Heritage venues you can visit for FREE, with talks, a touring concert and exhibitions throughout.
Enjoy a 21st Century encounter with the current Town Mayor in her regalia as she wanders around the heritage sites of Maldon. Explore the remains of a medieval leper hospital at St Giles in Spital Road, which is not usually open to the public, and enjoy some peace and quiet exploring the tranquil grounds of the Leech Memorial Gardens in Lodge Road or Friary Walled Garden in the Town Centre. Watch ‘the spinning lady’ demonstrate spinning her yarns in the Maeldune Heritage Centre.
Visit the Quaker meeting house where there will be an exhibition about Quakers’ active involvement in social and political change or the United Reformed Church where there will be a display about the life of Alfred Sadd, a missionary in the Gilbert Islands who was beheaded by the Japanese in the Second World War.
Drop in to the Moot Hall and let the tour guides show you around the historic building telling stories all the way, view the historical building of All Saint’s Church or why not have ‘tea in the garden’ at Thomas Plume’s Library before setting of to visit the delightful Museum in the Park.
Pop down to the Marina and celebrate Maldon’s Maritime heritage and join in with activities aboard the Steam Tug Brent, visit the Maldon Little Ship Club berthed on the Hythe where there’ll be a flotilla of Blackwater Sloops and other wooden craft made locally or St Mary’s Church (known as the fisherman’s Church) giving talks @ 11.30 and 2.30 on both days and a presentation about awarding Maldon & Heybridge Heritage Harbour Status at 6pm on 14th September.
The unique steam powered Beeleigh Mill will be open, and the starting point of the Salt, Water and Beer Shanty Singers touring concert, together with Beeleigh Abbey Gardens where you can enjoy a brief lay introduction to the history of the building (note the abbey will not be open).
